How Do You Get to Shirakawa-go by Bus and Car, and Where Do You Park?

Published 2026-10-04 · Sources checked 2026-10-04 · Treasure Hunting Co., Ltd.

This guide is for visitors who want to reach Shirakawa-go, the World Heritage village of thatched gassho-zukuri houses in Gifu Prefecture, and who need to decide between a bus and a car. It uses the English pages of the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association and three English pages of the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO). All pages were read on 2026-10-04.

Bus timetables and fares are not on these pages, so check them with the bus operators before you travel.

The short answer

The association's access page says Shirakawa-go is about 1.5 hours by highway bus from Kanazawa and Toyama, and about 3 hours from Nagoya. It also says there is no train in Shirakawa-go, so anyone travelling by rail takes a bus from the village to a station in a city such as Kanazawa or Takayama.

By bus from Takayama, Nagoya and Takaoka

JNTO's page on the village says it is best reached by bus from Takayama. From Nagoya and Gifu you take the JR Takayama Line to Takayama, and the buses to Shirakawa-go leave from the Takayama Bus Center and take around 50 minutes. JNTO's World Heritage page gives the same 50 minutes from Takayama Station, adds 3 hours from Nagoya Station, and says advance reservations are required on those direct services. It also describes a bus from Takaoka Station that takes 130 minutes to Shirakawa-go.

A third JNTO page, on Ogimachi village, says the village is 3 hours by train and bus from Nagoya Station. The three JNTO pages and the association therefore agree on roughly 3 hours from Nagoya, but they describe the journey in different ways, and none gives a timetable.

By rail

The access page also lists the JR limited express Wide View Hida and notes that it is available from Osaka and Toyama as well. Because the village has no station, treat the train as the first part of the journey and the bus as the second.

By car

The access page gives the route by National Route 158 to the Tokai Hokuriku Expressway. From Shirakawago IC you drive toward the village and follow the road signs to the Seseragi Park parking lot. The page says all vehicles should use that lot. When it is congested, staff guide cars to the Midashima Park parking lot or the Terao temporary parking lot.

The page lists room for about 40 large vehicles and about 200 standard vehicles, and says motorcycles can park too. Fees on the page are 10,000 yen for a bus or microbus, 2,000 yen for an ordinary car and 500 yen for a motorcycle. It adds that part of the parking fee is used for preservation work at the World Heritage site.

From the Seseragi lot it is a 2-minute walk across the suspension bridge to the village.

Autumn and Light-Up days

The page warns that when many large buses arrive in the autumn, the space for ordinary cars may be reduced and adjusted. On Light-Up event days a parking reservation is required for every vehicle. Buses may use the parking from 15:00, and ordinary cars must move from the Seseragi lot to the Terao temporary lot by 15:00. The association's events page lists announcements about car parking reservations for the 41st Light-Up Event in 2027 and about an advance reservation system for tour buses at the Seseragi Park lot. Read those announcements before you plan a winter evening visit.

Planning your day

JNTO's page on the village says you can cover Shirakawa-go in a couple of hours, but that longer is needed to take in the atmosphere. It recommends staying overnight in one of the lodging houses and says you need to book in advance. The Ogimachi page adds that the village can be very busy with tourist groups during the day, and suggests that staying overnight in a gassho-zukuri house is the best way to appreciate it.
